Observation Narrative
Directions to Plot: N on Route 24 from West Park entrance. Just before turn out on right for cemetery, turn right and cross field (no road). Park by edge of forest and walk in on trail/road first SW, then SE. When trail turns sharply to SE, Plot is 40 m W of trail.
Open remnant forest near pasture and adjacent to hardwood regeneration and areas with dead Pinus virginiana. Canopy is mostly Quercus alba (more outside sample) and Carya alba, Carya ovalis. Cornus florida dominates the open subcanopy/tall shrub layer. Low shrub is mostly Quercus alba seedlings with some Vaccinium. Herbs are sparse and ground is mostly covered with leaf litter. A good sized Castanea reaches the subcanopy. Area is heavily deer browsed and has several large trees and branches down from wind.
